He came to Walpole in 1820, and established himself in the shoemaking business, at the south part of the town, in district No. 9. There he remained eight years, when he removed into the village, where he lived and continued in the shoe business till nearly the close of his life. He manufactured sale boots and shoes for the western market, in connection with custom work, the latter of which was faithfully done. No customer ever complained of poor work that came from his shop. He was a man of positive views and strictly honest habits. He died May 29,1870. Ch. I. Mary Ann, b. Aug. 25,1817; d. July 10, 1841, unm. II. Phoebe, b. Sept. 2, 1819; m. Hartson Wight, April 2, 1839. III. Sarah, died in infancy. IV. Sarah 2nd, died in infancy. V. Harriet, b. Jan. 30, 1827; m. Jason Hodgkin, June 5, 1856, who died soon after. VI. Charles, b. Nov. 2, 1829; m. Mary E. dau. of Foskitt Farr. For a while he was in the shoe business with his father, but subsequently became a photographer, and established himself in Burlington, Vt., where his business was very profitable during the rebellion, and he accumulated a handsome fortune. He died Aug. 12, 1866, leaving a widow and two children. VII. Clarinda, b. Jan 25, 1832; m. George Houghton, a shoe manufacturer, April 10, 1859,--issue, seven ch., four living. VIII. Ellen, b. Sept. 12, 1834.
