April 6, 1761, and died in Walpole, Nov. 4, 1848. He died in Westmoreland Jan. 17, 1798. They were married June 6, 1779. William was born in Malden, April 28, 1788, and when he was quite young he removed, with his parents, to Westmoreland, and lived in the block house that once stood a few rods north of the cemetery, which was built for the protection of the people of Westmoreland against the butchery of the Indians. Most of the family of nine children were born in Westmoreland, and after the death of John, the father, his widow remained on the place a number of years. William is the only surviving member of the family, and the oldest person living in town at the present time (l878). He married Rebecca Martin, April 15,1812, who was born Dec. 19, 1794, and died at Walpole, Sept. 13, 1860. He came to this town early in the present century and established the business of a harness maker, in connection with which he kept a barber’s shop. He followed the above-named business till he had to relinquish it on account of the infirmities of age. His children were as follow: viz., I. Charlotte, b. in Lancaster, N.H., Dec. 10, 1813; m. George Allen, of this town, Sept. 6, 1838; they have one child, Grace, b. in Walpole .March 13, 1846. II. William, jr., b. in Walpole Sept. 17, 1815; d. unm. Apr. 10, 1840. III. James Lynde, b. in Walpole, Aug. 5, 1817; m. first, Mary J. Coburn, of Lowell, Mass., and had four ch.: 1st, William. 2d, James, d. young. 3d, Eleanor Farnham, and 4th, Submit, who d. early. He m. second, Rebecca B. Coburn. James Mitchell is favorably known in New England and the city and state of New York as a hotel-keeper--a business he has followed some thirty or more years. When his parents became old and feeble he provided for them a comfortable home for their declining years,--a laudable exhibition of his generous character. He is now the proprietor of the Hotel Brunswick, New York. IV. Phebe, b. Nov. 11, 1819; m. Ransom L. Ball, b June 28, 1848, and has three ch.: 1st, Ella Rebecca, b. Aug. 28, 1849. 2d, Jennie Mitchell, b. Aug. 3, 1851. 3d, Elnora Holland, b. Aug. 1, 1859. V. Sarah Louisa, b. Nov. 9, 1821; unm. VI. Mary Abigail, b. Oct. 17, 1824; d., unm., Jan. 2, 1858 VII. Edward Courtland, b. Aug. 8, 1827; m. Emily Beals, Boston, June 25, 1854. Ch. 1st, Edward Courtland, b. May 4, 1855. 2d, James William, b. Sept. 4, 1857. 3d, Emily Louisa, b. Sept. 5, 1860. 4th, Cora, b. Feb. 6, 1861. 5th, Frank Kendall, b. June 25, 1866. 6th, Benjamin E. Bates, b. Sept. 21, 1868. VIII. John Eaton, b. Feb. 3, 1830; m. Nancy O’Brien, Dec. 26, 1857; second wife’s name unknown. Ch. 1st, Mary Martin. 2d, William. 3d, Martha. (See Ap.) John enlisted into the United States service near the commencement of the late Rebellion, and served three years. (See His. of Reb.) IX. Rebecca, b. June 26, 1833; m. George Huntington, June 3, 1858, and lives at the West. X. Elnora, b. Aug. 9, 1835; m. Leonard Bisco Holland, Aug. 20, 1857, and has ten children.
