He brought his wife, whose maiden name was Phoebe Calkins, with him. He was a barber by trade, and had a shop where the Unitarian meeting-house now stands, which was the resort of John Livingston, George Aldrich, and a coterie of others of the same kith. His children were: I. Jemima, m. Elisha Hooper (see Hooper.) II. Lucy, b. 1788; d. Feb. 10, 1869. She is remembered as the good-natured maiden lady who taught many of those now living their A B C s, and cared for their little wants. III. George, b. 1796; m. Martha, dau. of Nathaniel Blanchard, of Westmoreland, and had four sons; one of whom, George, is a professor in one of the western colleges. IV. Harriet, m. Joseph Mason (see Mason.) V. Mary, b.1798; m. Samuel Whiting, of Concord, Mass., and had five ch.,--three d. young. The surviving ones were 1st, Thomas S., m. Rhoda Mead, of Hanover, N.H., and had three ch., two of whom are living; she d. March 15, 1863. Ch. (1) Mary, d. about 1868. (2) Clarence. (3) Lucia. 2d, Mary H., m. George Miller, of Lowell, Mass.; he d. 1865.
