He drew his household goods upon a hand sled and was guided on his way by marked trees to the above mentioned place. He built himself a cabin in the wilderness; but did not remain there only one year before he removed to Walpole and pitched on the farm now owned by Oliver Hall, where he remained for a while, when he removed to the Valley, where he located permanently. He owned at one time more poor land than any man living. in Walpole, the number of acres being two thousand, twelve hundred in Walpole, and the remainder in Essex, N.Y. His name first appears on the town records in 1787, as one of the selectmen, and he was elected to that office more years than any other man in town. He was for many years Justice of the Peace and is generally remembered as Squire Royce. In the first years of the present century, he embraced the political sentiments of Thomas Jefferson and lent his aid in the establishment and support of a political newspaper, known as the Political Observatory, published here. He was born in 1735 and died July 10, 1826. He married Sarah Marvin, b. 1749; d. Aug. 27, 1809. Ch. I. Marvin , b. 1770; d. July 22,1841; m. Prudence Stiles, of Lunenburg Mass., b. 1771; d. Abigail, m. Levi Harris, of Langdon, N.H. III. Abner, m. a Lovell and removed to the state of New York. IV. Jonathan, jr., m. Polly Emory and went to Illinois and had a large family and became wealthy. V. Sally, m. a Mead. VI. Lois, m. a Harvey, of Surry, N.H. VII. Elisha, m. Betsey Reed. VIII. Phebe, m. John Cross, of this town and had 9 ch., one of whom, John jr., m. Eunice Beckwith, of Acworth, N.H. IX. Polly, m. her cousin, Nehemiah Royce. (See Nehemiah Royce.) ROYCE, NEHEMIAH, came from Lyme, Conn., and settled in the Valley, about 1810, the exact time not being known. He married Polly, the daughter of Jonathan Royce, Esq., his cousin, and had the following children: I. Eliza, m. Elijah Mack, of Rockingham, Vt., and had 3 ch. II. Mary, m. Thomas Fortune, of Essex, N. Y.,--issue 2 ch. III. Cyrus, b. Jan. 8, 1814; m. Laura, daughter of Timothy Lovell, of Rockingham, Vt., b. Nov. 19, 1821. Ch. 1st, Cyrus, jr., m. Ida, dau. of Albert and Cordelia (Boyden) Richardson and an adopted dau. of one Boyden, of Brattleboro, Vt. 2d, LaFayette, m. a daughter of Rev. A. B. Flanders, of Chester, Vt.,--issue 1 ch. 3d, Grace S., b. Sep. 10, 1849; m. Lucius Wellington, of this town. 4th, Laura Ella, b. Aug. 7, 1852. IV. Samuel, b. July 25, 1815; m. Nancy S. Mack of Charlestown, N. H.,--issue, 1 ch., d. young. V. Nehemiah, jr., b. 1823; m. Sarah Ann, dau. of James and Lucy (Locke) Benson, d. Nov. 31, 1874. He came to his death from injuries received by falling down an embankment near his house a few days before he died. He was a quiet, unobtrusive man in his intercourse, and was highly esteemed by his townsmen. He was one of the selectmen of the town at the time of his death, and had served as such for several years preceding VI. Sarah Amanda, b. Nov. 30, 1826; m. Joshua Collins Quinton, b.
