He had no children, but adopted a daughter of one of his sisters., whose name was Elizabeth G. Stratton; she married George H. Cole, of Westmoreland, Jan. 1, l853. Mr. Ruggles was Town Clerk for twenty-one years, and is remembered as very quaint in his manners and mode of speaking. He and his wife both died in Ludlow, Vt., but were buried in this town. William had a brother, Samuel T., who lived in town a number of years, in the Valley, and had the following children. I. Ira White, b. July 3,1817. II. Cornelia, b. Mar. 4, 1820; m. Samuel Prentiss, whose former name was Hogg, and moved to Reading, Mass. III. Sumner Stratton, b. Nov. 26, 1821. IV. Caroline Orpha, b. at Dorchester, Mass., Aug. 6, 1824. V. Emily, b. July 16, 1827, at Dorchester. VI. Otis Taft, b. Nov. 26, 1829. VII. Walter Wilson, b. Nov. 6, 1831, at Reading, Mass. VIII. Helen, b. at Reading, Nov. 17, 1833. IX. Gould Grant, b. at Dorchester, June 6, 1836. X. Laura, b. at Reading, June 4, 1839. This family all moved to Reading, Mass.
