All rights reserved. ************************************************************************ Full copyright notice - http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm USGenWeb Archives - http://www.usgwarchives.net ************************************************************************ Surname: SHERMAN Source: Walpole As It Was and As It Is by George Aldrich, The Claremont Manufacturing Co., Claremont, N.H., 1880, pages 354-355 SHERMAN, EPHRAIM, the first settler by the name in Walpole was a descendant of John Sherman who was born in Durham, Eng. 1613, and came to America and settled in Watertown, Mass., in 1834. Ephraim Sherman, the fourth by that name in America, settled in Grafton, Mass. and had five children, viz., Elizabeth, Lydia, Martha, Thankful and Ephraim, who was born July 9, 1767, and was the father of the Sherman family which follows. His four sisters married four brothers--a circumstance, perhaps, without a parallel. The sixth, Ephraim, came to Walpole from Grafton, Mass. in 1803, and his parents came with him. His father died Mar. 6, 1818, and his mother soon after, Sep. 19, 1820. Ephraim Sherman, sixth, settled on the place now owned by Eli W. Graves, once owned by Manoah Drury. He married Remember Cook, of Tiverton, and had fourteen children, as follow: I. Mary, b. June 24, 1790, in Grafton, where nine of the family were born; m, Alexander Watkins Sr. (See Alexander Watkins’ family). II. Ruth, b. Aug. 17, 1791; m. Sampson Drury. (See Drury family.) III. Remember, b. June 3, 1793; m. Frederick Onstine, of Newburgh, Ohio, and had 9 ch. IV. Patty, b. Feb. 6, 1794; d. in infancy. V. Nancy, b. June 7, 1695; m. William Williams, of Newburgh, Ohio, and had 8 ch. VI. Ephraim jr., b. Mar. 17, 1796; d. Sep. 1853, unm. VII. Martha, b. Aug. 17, 1798: m. Charles Watkins, of Charlestown, N.H., and had 4 ch. VIII. Amy, b. Nov. 27, 1799; m. Charles Watkins of this town (See Watkins family.) IX. Betsey, b. June 26, 1801; m Russell Wheelock, of Grafton, Mass.--issue 3 ch. X. Clarissa, b. Sep. 2, 1802; m. Ariel Harris, of Vermont. XI. Harriet, b. July 10, 1804, the first child born in the family after they came to Walpole, m. Wm. Stafford and went to Concord, Mass. and had 6 ch. XII. William C., b. Sep. 26,1807; m. first, Fanny, dau. of John and Lydia (Graves) Maynard, Oct. 8, 1832, who d. Feb. 8, 1834--issue 1 ch.--d. in infancy; m. second, Lorinda H., a sister of his first wife, Nov. 28, 1837--issue one daughter, Helen Rebecca, b. July 15,1841. William C. Sherman, at one time, in middle life, was engaged in the manufacture of sale shoes in the firm of Allen, Maynard & Sherman. After the firm dissolved, he was for several years, an employee of A. K. Maynard & Co., in the same business, and was also assistant postmaster, during the eight years that Mr. Maynard held the office. In 1861, he was appointed Postmaster and held the office, with the exception of about three months, (when Philip Peck held the appointment,) till 1869. Since that time he has lived in retirement. XIII. Maria, b. Apr. 5, 1809; m. first, Strong Jones, and had one son Joseph--resides in Chicago, Ill.; m. second, Lincoln Brooks, and had one dau. who m. a Van Black, and lives in Lodi, Ill. Ephraim Sherman, d. Oct. 11, 1819; his wife, Remember, d. July 17, 1841.
