The firm occupied the old brick store, after 1806, and had a branch house in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were largely engaged in the Western fur trade, which caused Mr. Stone to be absent from Walpole a large share of his time picking up furs in the West. He was Postmaster at Walpole in 1816, and his compensation was $240.55. In 1817 Oliver Allen had the office, but in 1820 Mr. Stone was re-instated and held the office till 1826. His compensation in 1824 was $208.42. In 1828, he, with his family, moved to Dayton, Ohio. In 1799, July 4, he married Frances, the dau. of Col. John Bellows, by whom he had 2 ch; I. Maria, who d. in 1802, aged one year. II. Frances, who d. in infancy. His wife d. Aug. 13, 1803, aged 23, so that he was then without wife or children. He married again, Aug. 22, 1805, Hannah, the sister of his first wife, and had 5 ch. III. Fanny, b. May 29, 1806; m. Francis E. Phelps, of Windsor, Vt. IV. Sophia, b. Mar 20, 1808; m. a Sears, of Buffalo, N.Y. V. Hannah, b. Nov. 4, 1810; m. a Richards. VI. William Bainbridge, b. June 7, 1814. He went West with his father. VII. Nathaniel Edward, b. Feb. 23, 1870; m. Laura, dau. of Hubbard Bellows.
