Sylvanus Titus came to Walpole, about 1775, from Connecticut, and was a soldier in the Revolutionary army. He settled on the hill north of the residence of Caleb Foster, and the remains of the old house where he used to live are still to be seen. His children were as follows: I. Mary, m. Nathan Newton. II. Lavinia, m. John Gates. III. Asa, m. Rebecca, dau. of John Graves, jr., and lived with his father. Ch. 1st, Comfort, d. young 2d, John, m. Susan, dau. of Ebenezer Wellington. Ch. (1) Ebenezer, m. Sophronia Ballou. (2) John, m. Almira Ballou. (3) Asa, d. in California. (4) William, m. and lives in Hancock, N.H, (5) Sarah M., b Oct. 18, 1836; m. William Warn. 3d, Charles, lived to old age, and d. in town, unm. 4th, Margaret, m. Calvin Graves. 5th, Preston, b. Oct. 12, 1801; m. Vashti, dau. of Ebenezer Wellington. Ch. (1) Louisa, d. when about twenty years of age. (2) Caroline, b. May 19, 1830; m. first, Lewis Dunshee--- issue, three ch.; m. second, Ora W. Dwinnell. (3) Rhoda M., m. Curtis B. Wilbur; lives in town. (4) Emily, m. a Norris (5) Dora, m. George Clark, of Springfield, Mass. 6th, Sylvanus, m. first, Lydia Martin, and second, Harriet, dau. of Elisha and Sally (Russell) Angier, who bore him one child. 7th, Asa, jr., m. Sophie, dau. of Jeduthan Russell, of Saxton’s River, by whom he had two ch., Jane and Charles, neither of whom is living. 8th; Almira R., b. Nov. 26, 1817; m. Frederick A. Wier. (See Wier.) IV. Sylvanus. V. Samuel. VI. Mary. VII. Asahel. VIII. James. The five last named were all baptized by parson Fessenden in 1788. Capt. Sylvanus brought up two sons of his brother James, whose names were Sylvanus and James. Sylvanus--great Vene, as he was called--m. Harriet Snow, by whom he had four ch. He went west. James m. Maria Dennison. James, Sylvanus, and their cousin John, were persons of great physical strength and endurance. It has been said that John Titus had a physical organization which, for perfect development, harmony of part, and pleasing contour, was seldom seen. Sylvanus and James, nephews of Capt, Sylvanus, are remembered by the old citizens as famous drummers.
