He was an iron-founder, and had a foundry on the brook, west of the meeting-house, in the "hollow," where he had purchased a large tract of land. When he came to town, that portion where he settled, was one dense forest, and his wife always kept n stock of fire-brands ready to drive away bears from the premises, as that kind of gentry have an instinctive dread of fire. He married very young, Martha Adams, a cousin of John Adams, the second president. A silver spoon made from a tankard once belonging to President Adams, is now in the possession of one of Daniel Whipple’s grand-daughters, Mary Robinson. When they came to Walpole they were mere children; but they forced their way through all the hardships and privations incident to frontier life, living in a small hut that once stood near the Wellington place, getting their milling done somewhere near the Merriam place, and attending church in the first meeting-house that stood near J. W. Hayward’s residence. She, it is said, was a woman possessing great force of character and personal worth--always sympathizing with those in affliction and ready to lend a helping hand. He was born in 1750, and died Dec. 29, 1796. Ch. I. Daniel, b. Jan. 18, 1777; m. Zerviah, dau. of Nathan Bandy, Sep. 25,1800 He had a son, Daniel, who m.
