His father was an English soldier, and after the close of the war in which he was engaged he went back to the mother country, leaving two children, a son and daughter. Samuel was cared for by one Maj. Stratton, of Northfield, Mass., and the girl married Samuel Marshall, the grandfather of John W. Marshall, of this town. In 1775, Samuel surreptitiously helped Mary, the daughter of Aaron Burt, a merchant of that place, out of the window of her father’s house and they were clandestinely married, when he and his wife made their way to Walpole. He took possession of some valuable land in the southwest corner of the town; but of whom he obtained his title is not known. There he lived for several years unmolested; but at length his title was disputed by one, Mrs. Norman, the daughter and heir of an Irish lawyer, by the name of Brush. The case was in court some twenty years, the proceedings of which will be found in the historical part of this work. Samuel Wiers died at Charlestown, in 1802, while attending court there. He requested that he might be buried on his claim, saying, "I can hold my length and breadth at any rate." His request was granted, and a modest stone slab marks his resting place on the farm now owned by Lyman Chickering. He was married twice. By the first wife he had five children, viz: I. Samuel M., b.
