He came to Walpole in 1774, and bought the place where Philip Thomas now resides, which is known as the Wolcott place. Mr. Wolcott took his deed under the Crown of Great Britain. When he bought the place, there was standing a small hut upon it. He immediately went to work making clearings, and being an industrious pioneer, and a carpenter by trade, soon had his land under cultivation, and respectable buildings upon it. He was at work in his field the day the battle of Bennington was fought, and distinctly heard the booming of canon. He, with many other Walpole men, was at the surrender of Burgoyne. Mr. Wolcott was a distant relative of Oliver Wolcott, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. At the close of the 18th century his first wife died without issue. By his second wife, he had four children, all daughters. I. Mary, m. Ebenezer Wellington. II. Esther m. Increase S. Guild. III. Clarissa, m., first, Harvey Foster, second, Philip Thomas. IV.
