Died, at Canterbury, Conn., on the 9th instant, Dea. John Barstow,* aged about 85 years; long known as a public man, and for more than 30 years an officer in the Church of Christ. During the war of the Revolution, he buckled on his armor and engaged in the battles of his country. He was present at the surrender of Burgoyne. He kept a daily journal while in the army, giving account of many curious and remarkable events. After the Revolution he was for almost 20 years in succession one of the selectmen of the town. And the remark was often made that he had saved to the town more than his own weight in specie, by appointing overseers for the vicious, binding out the idle, and promoting the general weal! He was also several times a Representative of his town in the General Assembly of Connecticut. Few men it is believed were ever appointed on more civil references and Ecclesiastical Councils. For many years he was superintendent of the Sabbath school. And, after he resigned that office, through infirmity, the aged of the congregation formed themselves into a Sabbath school class, and invited him to be their teacher; which office he sustained till a short time before his death. He died of typhus fever, in the joyful hope of glory; sending word to all his friends to prepare to meet him in heaven.—Communicated. *Father of Rev. Mr B. of this town.
