Simon Merrill, age abt 58, died in Clarksville Dec. 28, 1888 of wounds 
received in the army.[Civil War]  Simon and brother Cyrus were among the first 
to enlist.  Cyrus was killed in the war and Simon lost a leg. Simon was a 
member of Merrill Post of Cannan and West Stewartstown. He was honest, upright 
and industrious.

Simon and his wife were in the woods cooking for Hiram Hillard at the time of 
his death.
