Davis, attorney at law, was born in Grafton county, N.H., in 1837; enlisted in the late war in 1861 in Co. I, 1st R.I.C.; served in that regiment two years, and then enlisted in Co. I, 1st N.H.C., and served from March, 1863, to August 1865; enlisted as a private, and came out a commissioned officer. He was taken prisoner at Paris, Va., and exchanged at the end of four weeks, and again taken prisoner at Winchester, Va., and escaped and reached the Union army at Harper's Ferry. He was again taken prisoner by Wade Hampton's troops, and taken to Richmond, and removed to Castle Thunder; thence to Salisbury, N.C., and was paroled in the spring of 1865 at Wilmington, N.C. He was engaged as a cavalry scout most of the time during his service.
