COWETTE III This cemetery is located in the southeast section of Manchester, originally Derryfield, upon the eastern side of Mammoth Road, between Cilley and Candia Roads. According to C.E. Potter in his 1856 volume "The History of Manchester", this property was deeded to the town of Derryfield by Leut.(sic) John Hall and the town took possession of same on December 13, 1759 by the following vote: "…that the Burying Yard in Derryfield shall be in that place of ground that Leut. Hall gave a deed of to the town, in the most suitable part if it, not improved." This was the Meetinghouse lot and the Burying Yard was located, cleared and enclosed in the southern part of it in 1777. Originally it was enclosed by "merchantable boards and oak posts.", but in 1803 it was voted to "raise money to fence the "Grave Yard" on the front side with a good stone wall said wall to be 4 1/2 feet high, 3 feet thick at the bottom, and 1 foot thick at the top, with a good and sufficient gate, painted." This was done by William Farmer at the cost of $3.40 per rod and stood until 1842 when it was replaced by a picket fence. Currently, the cemetery is faced by a stone wall much like that which was to be taken down; the other three sides enclosed by a less substantial wall of stones. Although it presently contains 53 monuments, Potter assures us "this Burying Yard was more extensively used than any one in town until the Valley Cemetery was laid out in 1840." This is simply explained by the fact that the area was the "centre" of old Derryfield until the advent of the mills and trade along the Merrimack River and the subsequent infill of a growing population between the two. The oldest gravestone in the yard bears the name of Mrs. Lois Flint who died August 29, 1799, but, considering the yard was laid out in 1777, it is probable that others preceeded her to their resting places. Further, a casual observation of the terrain reveals that many stones have likely been lost in the 204 years since. NOTES: Since my own 1993 survey of this cemetery, I found the W.P.A. did a similar survey in 1938. A comparison of the two indicates that although the WPA data collector made some erronious transcriptions, the value of that survey is nontheless great as many stones have been lost since 1938 yet the information found on those stones still comes down to us via that work.. As well, some othe information on the existing stones has become illegibal over the ensuing 55 years but can be gleaned from the W.P.A.survey. The last 13 stones which are asterisked are stones which no longer exist. Bracketed [ ] information indicates that ino longer legible but taken from the WPA survey. Where a dash - is found the information was likely not legible in 1938 and could not be recorded. Regarding mistakes by the WPA surveyor, I have corrected them and made no provisions withinthe text to denote them with the exception of one case, that of Hezekiah Young (stone #41). As can be noted, the DOD and AGhave been bracketed. Unless this Hezekiah Young was really the junior to an elder Hezekiah, the date cannot be correcIt is likely that instead of recording the DOD as 1851, the WPA surveyor should have recorded it as 1815. This would be in ping with the dates of death of his children and his purported age at the time of his death. Post Script: I have already completed 4 other old cemeteries in Manchester and have partially completed 2 others. In these I have only done the oldest stones as these cemeteries were too large to complete in the time available to me. Over the nefew months, I should be posting these to the Gen Web Tombstone Project.
