WILLIAM  CAMPBELL.

William Campbell was born in Scotland, and came to this country to avoid
service in the British army. He arrived at Pittsfield in the spring of 1860,
and worked for a few months for Sir Moses D. Perkins as a farm hand ; then
for the late Jeremiah Berry until he enlisted in Company G, Seventh Regiment
New Hampshire volunteers, in the summer of 1861, and was killed at Fort
Wagner July 18, 1863. Although no record of Mr. Campbell's service is found
in the adjutant-general's report he was a hero nevertheless, and laid his
life upon the altar of his adopted country. His comrades relate many
incidents of their camp life.

At one time when he and three others, one of whom had lost an eye, were
engaged in a friendly game of cards, Campbell detected the one-eyed man
cheating, and he exclaimed in his broad Scotch accent,-- " I am a man of
peace. I seek a quarrel with no man ; neither do I intend to be personal,
but if I catch anybody cheating in this game again, he'll lose his other
Eye."
