His father, Nathaniel Smith, moved to Chichester, where George resided until his marriage to Miss Arvilla Fellows, when he returned to this town, where their child, a daughter, was born. He was mustered into Company D, Fifteenth New Hampshire volunteers, October 8, 1862, and was mustered out August 13, 1863. Comrade Smith went into camp at Concord. While on guard he contracted a severe cold which produced pneumonia, and this ended in consumption, of which he died in December, 1865. He did not leave the state.
