Revolutionary War pension application S 17829 N. H. Agency July 16, 1832, Nathan Ballard, (born in Andover, Mass. in 1745,) of Concord, N. H. deposed: that while living at Wilton, N. H. in 1775 he received the commission of Lieutenant under the hand of Matthew Thornton, and at once commenced his duties, repairing to Winter Hill where he remained two or three months. Soon after he went there his captain, - Benjamin Taylor- died and his duties were discharged by deponent, although he never received a commission of captain; that in 1776 he received another commission bearing the signature of M. Ware, and began his duties; was at the Battle of Bennington in 1777, and served at that time about four months; that later he served under Capt. Benjamin Main in R. I. Signed: Nathan Ballard. The original commissions of Nathan Ballard, one as 1st. Liuet. in Capt. Benjamin Taylor's Co. signed Matthew Thornton, Chairman of Committee of Safety of N. H. Dec. 6, 1775; and the other as First Lieut. in the 8th Company, Fifth regiment of N. H. Militia, signed M. Ware, President of Council, at Exeter, N. H. Dec. 20, 1776, are on file in the Department. Reuben Abbot and Nathan Chandler, both of Concord, N. H. testified to acquaintance with soldier for thirty or forty years, and their belief that he was a Rev. soldier, etc. In answer to the usual inquiry, required by the Department, soldier stated that he was born in Andover, Mass. and lived there until he was 22 years old when he moved to Wilton, N. H. Claim allowed and Certificate No. 769, Concord, N. H. Agency, was issued Oct. 18, 1832, Act June 7, 1832. In the case is a memorandum to the effect that soldier died January 4, 1835.
