Conrad REDONDO BEACH, Calif. - John Thornton Conrad, infant son of John H. and Kathryn A. (Thornton) Conrad, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999 after a lengthy illness. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Thomas K. and Gail M. Thornton of Hampton, N.H. (formerly of Exeter, N.H.) and H. Lee and Linda Conrad of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Marion H. Young KITTERY - Marion H. Young, 76, of Route 1, widow of David W. Young, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 at the Homestead Nursing Care Center. Born May 4, 1923, in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of Merle R. and Ethel W. Poole. She attended the Eliot Baptist Church, Eliot, Maine. Mrs. Young was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign War, Portsmouth, N.H. She was also a Gold Star Mother, York, Maine. Mrs. Young loved music, church, bingo, friends and family. Survivors include two sons, David C. Young and his wife, Lynne, of Eliot, Maine, and Dennis R. Young and his wife, Susan, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a daughter, Susan M. Young of Kittery, Maine; and seven grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Robert B. Young. James R. Rhone NAPERVILLE, Ill. - James R. Rhone, 53, formerly of Hopkinton, N.H., died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 at his residence after a battle with kidney cancer. Born March 29, 1946, in Huntingdon, Penn., he was raised in Hershey, Penn. where he was an exceptional high school wrestler. He was recently inducted into the Pennsylvania High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. Jim was a graduate of the Lower Dauphin High School, and the University of Pittsburgh Class of 1968. He joined the Army and fought in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion. He married Marian Brubaker, his wife of 29 years, in 1970. In 1975 they moved to New Hampshire and in 1995, to Naperville. Jim was the president of the Delta Dental Plan of Illinois; past president of the Northeast Delta Dental Plan, Concord, N.H.; and was a board member and treasurer of the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium Foundation. He was also a board member of the Illinois Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped. He was also an avid golfer and a New England Patriots fan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Matthew James (Zara) Rhone of Naperville; two grandchildren, Christopher Michael Rhone and Kiersten Rhone of Naperville; his mother, Betty Lou (Meyers) Rhone of San Francisco, Calif.; a brother, Dann Rhone, also of San Francisco; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, James R. Rhone Sr. Grace M. Thompson PORTSMOUTH - Grace M. (Merritt) Thompson, 82, of 928 South St., widow of Harry W. Thompson, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 at the Edgewood Centre. Born May 4, 1917, in Revere, Mass., she was the daughter of Ernest and Lilla (Boyington) Merritt. Mrs. Thompson had been employed by the former Moulton's Candy Store and retired from the former Teddy's Lunch in Portsmouth. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newington. Mrs. Thompson is survived by a daughter, Patricia A. Dorow and her husband, David, of Portsmouth; a son, Robert C. Thompson and his wife, Fran, of POrtsmouth; three grandsons, Donald Dorow and his wife, Karen, of Portsmouth, Daniel Dorow of Portsmouth and David Dorow of Greenland; three great-grandchildren, Patrick, Kortney and Justin Dorow, all of Portsmouth; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ernestina Godfrey of Beverly, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Alice B. Demers PORTSMOUTH - Alice B. (Freeman) Rines Demers, 92, of 928 South St., widow of Leo Demers, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. Born Dec. 17, 1906, in Eliot, Maine, she was the daughter of Allan and Bessie L. (Smart) Freeman Mrs. Demers and her husband, who died on April 1, 1993, were married on July 2, 1992 after they had met as residents of the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. At the time of their marriage, Alice was 86 and Leo was 81. Before her retirement, Mrs. Demers had been employed at the Rockingham Hotel. She was predeceased by her first husband, retired Lt. Sewell L. Rines, U.S. Navy, who died April 5, 1966. She is survived by two nieces, Paula Knight of Bushnell, Fla. and Robin Marlowe of Orangeburg, S.C. Ruth R. Varney ELIOT - Funeral services for Ruth R. Varney, 99, of 26 Varney Lane, widow of Judge George D. Varney Sr., were held Monday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. The Rev. David Avery, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, officiated. In attendance were members of the church; the Kittery Fire Chief, with a contingent of members from the Kittery and Kittery Point Fire Departments; members of the Town of Eliot Republican Committee; representatives from the Berwick Academy Alumni Association; and Town of Eliot Police Chief, Al Boston. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, with committal prayers by the Rev. Avery. Honorary pallbearers were Kathlyn Miller, Joyce Oschlager, Laura Stark, Laurie White and Karen Valencia.
