Miller SOUTH HAMPTON - Audrey R. Miller, RN, 77, of 44 W. Whitehall Road, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, in Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport, Mass., after a lengthy illness. She was born May 5, 1923, in Watertown, Mass., the daughter of the late James J. and Muriel (Henderson) Ryan. She had resided in Belmont, Mass., and in South Hampton for 36 years. She was a 1941 graduate of Arlington (Mass.) High School and earned her registered nursing degree in psychiatry from McLean Hospital School of Nursing, Belmont, Mass., in 1945. Mrs. Miller served as a head nurse at Haverhillcrest Nursing Home, Haverhill, Mass., and Hillside and Maplewood Nursing Homes in Amesbury, Mass., retiring in 1986 because of arthritis. She had previously served as head nurse, supervisor of in-service education and recreational therapist at McLean Hospital for 19 years. She served as supervisor of the checklist in South Hampton and as a trustee of the Barnard (School) Trust. She was a founding member and membership secretary of the South Hampton Committee for Voter's Rights and Information. After moving to South Hampton she worked with the local 4-H group and started a small farm, gradually increasing her menagerie. While living in Belmont she was active in many civic and educational endeavors. She was a founder and vice president of the Massachusetts Zoological Society and a trustee of the Belmont Day School. Throughout her life she was an ardent advocate for enhancing the lives of children at home, her community and in underdeveloped countries, and safeguarding endangered wildlife and the environment. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Richard H. Miller Jr.; four sons, Jonathan R. Miller of South Hampton, Richard H. Miller III of Lakewood, Wash., Alexander R. Miller of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Christopher G. Miller of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Mary J. Miller of Salisbury, Mass., and Margaret F. Miller of Stratham; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Doris Dane of Marblehead, Mass., Kathleen Qualitz of Amesbury, and Lorraine Derrick of Alexandria, Va.; one brother, Donald Ryan of Woburn, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. in the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury. Services will be Wednesday in St. James Episcopal Church in Amesbury, following calling hours. Burial will be in South Hampton Cemetery.
