Caminati RYE BEACH - Delfo John Caminati, 89, of 665 Central Road, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000 at his home. He was born Aug. 3, 1911 in Portsmouth, the son of the late Antonio and Laura (Calisesi) Caminati. He lived in Portsmouth until 1965 when he and his family moved to Rye Beach. Mr. Caminati graduated Portsmouth High School in 1929 and received his degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1934. While at the university, he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He first worked in New York City for the real estate firm of Cushman and Wakefield and was the manager of the Brill Building, which housed the offices of many notable musicians and songwriters of the time. He worked there until the outbreak of World War II. Mr. Caminati served in the war as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army 3067th Ordinance Service Company in the Aleutian Islands. Upon his discharge from the service, he, along with his brother-in-law, the late Thomas F. Mullen, founded Port City Beverage Inc. He operated the business from 1947 until his retirement in 1991. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Portsmouth for more than 35 years. He was a member of the Frank E. Booma American Legion Post 6 and the Emerson Hovey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 168, both of Portsmouth. He was also a life member of the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks and a member of the Warwick Club of Portsmouth, The Federal Fire Society, and the Mechanic Fire Society. Mr. Caminati was a former member of both The Portsmouth Country Club and the Wentworth-by-the-Sea Country Club. He was also a member of the Abenaqui Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. Mr. Caminati (known affectionately at "Babbo") is survived by two daughters, Cornelia C. Gray and her husband Douglas of Rye, and Nora C. Blouin and her husband Donald of Rye Beach; a brother, Dante J. Caminati of Rye; a sister, Daria C. Hackney of Nashua; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins in Italy whom he and his family visited regularly over the years. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Alice (Mullen) Caminati, who passed away in 1998. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A celebration of his life will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
