Granger EXETER - Doris Arlene (Hartwell) Granger, 86, of 15 RiverWoods Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000 at her home. She was born Aug. 27, 1914, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of the late Norcross N. and Florence J. (Chapple) Hartwell. She had resided in Durham and Lee for 49 years before moving to Exeter five years ago. She was a graduate of Arlington (Mass.) High School and completed the kindergarten teacher training program cum laude at Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass. She continued her education at the University of New Hampshire and Boston University. Mrs. Granger was a kindergarten teacher in the Oyster River School District for 26 years, until her retirement in 1976. She served as head teacher at Mast Way School in Lee for seven years. She had previously taught in Brattleboro, Vt. She was a pioneer in the New Hampshire School Readiness Project and was a certified Gesell Developmental examiner for school readiness. She was president of the N.H. Chapter of the American Association for the Education of Young Children; a member and president of the Lee Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Lee Historical Society; she was Lee's representative to the Oyster River Home Health Association; a 36-year member of the American Bell Association serving as president of the New England Chapter and as a musical director for the international association; a member of the Strafford County Retired Teachers Association; and of Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary society for women teachers. She was an accomplished pianist and provided entertainment and accompaniment at many musical events. The widow of Ralph H. Granger, her husband of 59 years who died in 1998, she is survived by two sons and their wives, Dr. Clark A. and Rosemarie Granger of Woolwich, Maine, and Dr. Ralph H. and Judith Granger of Farmington, Maine; one daughter and her husband, Carolyn G. and Stanley Whitlock of Merrimack; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Durham Cemetery.
