Born Sept. 26, 1917, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Douglas L. and Marion (Philbrick) Keys. Raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn and received a bachelor of science degree in physics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, now Polytechnic Institute of New York. He was employed by the Sperry Gyroscope Co. during World War II as an instruction supervisor, training military personnel in the use and maintenance of anti-aircraft weapons. After the war he joined the advertising firm of Kenyon and Eckhart, where he handled such accounts as Lincoln-Mercury, Shell Oil and Ford. His advertising career took him to Michigan then briefly to Connecticut and back to Michigan in 1958, which remained his home for the rest of his life. He became vice president of the company in 1956. Poor health forced an early retirement in the '70s but allowed more time every summer in his beloved Rye where he had spent childhood summers at the "beach" home, built by his grandfather at the corner of Cable Road and Ocean Boulevard. He would return to vacation at the Rye Beach house every summer of his life until his health finally made that impossible this year. He was the husband of Margaret (Yoder) Keys for 56 years. In addition to his wife, family members include three sons, Richard R. Keys of Lawrenceville, Ga., Rodman B. Keys of Waterford, Mich., and Andrew P. Keys of Redford, Mich.; five grandchildren; one sister, Natalie Cummings of Sarasota, Fla.; and two nephews. KEYS - Douglas Leighon Keys Jr., of Michigan, died Nov. 29, 2000.
