He was born March 15, 1911, in India, the son of Harry G. and Theodosia K. Bissell. He was raised in West Newton, Mass., before coming to Phillips Exeter Academy in 1926. Upon his graduation in 1929, he entered Harvard University from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1933. While at Harvard he was the coxswain of the Cassidy crews, and was a member of the Owl Club. Mr. Bissell joined the faculty of Phillips Exeter Academy as an English instructor in 1933. He was a coach of the school crews, serving as varsity coach from 1936 until 1948. He was appointed director of scholarship students in 1946 and was charged with developing a scholarship program for students in need of financial assistance. From the 1940s through the 1970s he crisscrossed the United States, identifying prospective scholarship students. In 1961 Mr. Bissell shifted his focus as alumni secretary. He invigorated alumni participation in all aspects of Exeter life. From 1961 until his retirement in 1976 and for 24 years thereafter was a dedicated emeritus. In retirement he remained active in the Exeter community, coaching squash at all levels, attending sporting events regularly and undertaking special assignments for the school's alumni office. The widower of Sarah G. (Winslow) Bissell, who died in 1987, he is survived by one son, John W. "Jack" Bissell of Wayne, N.J.; one daughter, Nancy Bissell Goldcamp of Vienna, Va.; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Friday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. in Exeter Congregational Church, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the F.E.
