Cashman SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Alfred V. Cashman, age 74, of High Knoll Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a long illness. He was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Norwich, Conn., the son of Maj. William and Lily (Mitchell) Cashman, who were both officers of the Salvation Army. He graduated from Portsmouth (N.H.) High School, then attended classes at the University of Virginia. At the age of 16, he had an after-school job as letter carrier in Portsmouth. He went on to become postmaster of Portsmouth's Management Sectional Center. In 1974, he was moved to Portland, serving in the same capacity. He was responsible for deliveries in 217 communities in southern Maine. He retired after more than 40 years with the U.S. Postal Service. For the next 10 years, he was a courier for Path Lab Inc. In 1944, he married Marie Penney at the Salvation Army in Portsmouth. He played the cornet in the Salvation Army band and recently had played the euphonium in the Bethel Christian Church band in North Berwick. He had an avid love of music of all kinds. He was a member of the Gideons Camp of Sanford. He enjoyed bowling and had become the senior bowling champion of New Hampshire, bowling in a Portsmouth league. He was a collector of many things, including lighthouses. His favorite spot was the Nubble Light House in York. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie Cashman; a son, Brian and wife Terry Cashman of Scarborough; four daughters, Mrs. John (Darlene) Grant and Mrs. Paul (Carol) Bryant, all of Kittery, Mrs. Bruce (Sharon) Wiggin of Eliot and Mrs. Robert (Donna) Kraft Jr. of Kittery Point; a brother, William Cashman and wife Mildred of Newmarket; sister-in-law, Mrs. Chesley (Dorothy) Cashman of Keene, N.H.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
