ETIENNE LAROSE, O.M.I. Reverend Etienne Larose, Oblate of Mary Immaculate, died on Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at the age of 83 after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 18, 1917 in Repentigny, Quebec, the son of the late Hubert and Lumena (Miron) Larose. Reverend Larose entered the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in July of 1935 and was ordained to the priesthood on June of 1941 in Ottawa. He served as a missionary in the Hudson Bay Vicariate from 1942 to 1944, and from 1944 until 1971 he was Professor at the Oblate Minor Seminary in Bucksport, Maine. From 1971 to 1979 he served as Assistant at the Shrine of Our Lady of Grace in Colebrook and from there, he went to St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, where he was Pastoral Minister and Associate Chaplain until 1982. In September of 1983 he was assigned to the staff of St. Joseph the Worker Shrine in Lowell, Mass., where he remained until 1992. From 1992 to 1996 he was at the Oblate Retreat House in Hudson, where he was Second Assistant. For health reasons, Father Larose went into full retirement in September of 1996. He returned to Canada and took up residence at the Residence de Mazenod in Richelieu, where he remained in frail health until his death. In addition to his Oblate family, Reverend Larose is survived by three brothers, four sisters, two sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law, all of Canada, including Reverend Cyrille Larose, OFM Cap; Madeleine, Lionel and his wife, Rejeanne; Fernande and her husband, Alfred; Denise and her husband, Maurice; Laurent and his wife, Claire; and Marie-Paule and her husband, Marcel. All services were held at the Residence de Mazenod in Richelieu. Calling hours were on Wednesday, December 13 with a prayer service, and the funeral Mass was celebrated the next day. He will be cremated and his remains interred at Residence de Mazenod.
