Turbyne WINSLOW, Maine - Fern Allen Turbyne, 87, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 26, 1913, in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of Winfield R. and Dora (Hurd) Allen. She attended Bangor schools and was a 1934 graduate of the University of Maine, with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. While at the university she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, serving as president during her senior year. She was a champion in women's athletics in hockey, volleyball, soccer, basketball and riflery. She was a campus reporter and women's sports editor; a YWCA World Fellowship chairman; Sophomore Eagle; All Maine Women president; and in her senior year was a proctor at the Maples, the freshman dormitory. Following graduation she was class alumni reporter, receiving the general Alumni Association Gold "M" Award at the class's 50th reunion and the Black Bear Award for devotion and loyalty to the university in 1976. Mrs. Turbyne taught developmentally challenged children in Skowhegan and Waterville, Maine, schools for 10 years. During her college years she worked summers at Seaside Inn in Seal Harbor, Maine, and also at Central Maine Power Co. in Waterville until her marriage. She was a Girl Scout leader and trustee of Girl Scout Camp Kirkwold; a member of First Congregational Church; the Women's Fellowship, Couples Club and 50 Plus Club. She provided flowers for church services and shut-ins. She was a member of the Audubon Society; was an avid bird watcher and was a member of the Central Maine Garden Club. The widow of John J. Turbyne, who died in 1999, she is survived by one son and his wife, James A.R. and Susan Turbyne of Rumney; one daughter, Marjorie Turbyne Robinson of Exeter and her significant other, Merle R. "Jake" Wilbur of Newfields; a son-in-law, James F. Robinson and his significant other, Pauline Wright of Lynn, Mass.; three grandchildren; one sister, Rena M. Allen of Millinocket, Maine; and one brother-in-law, Lynwood A. Cookson of Waterville. Memorial services were held December 14 in First Congregational Church, Waterville, with the Rev. David Anderman and the Rev. Peter Joseph officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the University of Maine Alumni Fund, designated for the Class of 1934 Cultural Fund, Box 550, Orono, ME 04473-0550 or to the First Congregational Church, 7 Eustis Parkway, Waterville, ME 04901.
