Born June 21, 1904, in Kenduskeag, he was the son of George F. and Elizabeth (McIntyre) Varney. Moving to Kittery in 1918, he attended and graduated from the Kittery schools. He worked as a machinist shop planner for 31 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1962. He attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards with his friends. He and his wife, Mamie, had wintered in Sebring, Fla., for many years. He was a member of the Portsmouth Country Club; Sebring Country Club; Naval Masonic Lodge in Kittery, for more than 70 years; National Retired Federal Employees; and A.A.R.P. He was predeceased by his brother, Albert Varney, who died in 1973; and by a sister, Dora Varney, who died in 1918. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mamie (Hurley) Varney of Kittery; son, Basil and his wife, Mary Varney, of Portsmouth, N.H.; grandson, Rodney Varney of Portsmouth; great-granddaughter, Kaylene Varney of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
