LeGro Lane PETERBOROUGH - H. LeGro "Terry" Lane, 84, of Winter Street, died on Dec. 31, 2000 in River Mead after a lengthy illness. Born in Lancaster on May 19, 1916, he was the son of George R. and Nona (Balch) Lane. In 1934, he graduated from Kennett High School, Conway. In 1938, he graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a major in forestry. Mr. Lane moved to Peterborough with the U.S. Forest Service after the hurricane of 1938. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a navigator on a B-24 Liberator bomber. He flew 51 missions over Europe and was wounded on his 51st mission. His decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross with four oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart and the Presidential Unit Citation with three stars. He instructed aviation cadets in navigation and served as group and squadron leader on several combat missions. After returning to Peterborough, Mr. Lane and his wife operated F.C. Mercer & Co., an Oldsmobile and Chevrolet dealership located on Main Street in Peterborough, until they sold the business and retired in 1972. After retiring, Mr. Lane and his wife spent most of the winter in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mr. Lane enjoyed mountain climbing, scaling the Matterhorn and Mount Kilimanjaro. He also climbed Mount Monadnock and enjoyed tennis. In addition, he served as treasurer of All Saints Episcopal Church and taught Sunday school for many years. He also served on the Peterborough School Board and was active in Boy Scouting. In 1950 he joined the Peterborough Rotary Club and served as president from 1962 to 1963. Mr. Lane also served as a director of the First National Bank of Peterborough. He was predeceased by a son, David R. Lane, who died in 1972. Family members include his wife of 59 years, Arlene (Mercer) Lane of Peterborough; a daughter, Margaret Fenton of Andover, Mass.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at noon in Upper Pine Hill Cemetery, Peterborough. The Rev. Lewis Stone will officiate.
