Dunleavy EXETER - Janet Egleson Dunleavy, 71, of RiverWoods, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at her home from complications associated with Parkinson's disease. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and earned a bachelor of arts degree at Hunter College, Manhattan, in 1951 and was awarded a doctorate in English literature in 1966 by New York University. She did post-doctoral study at the Dublin Institute for advanced studies in 1978 and 1981. She was elected to Hunter's Hall of Fame in 1978. In 1986 she was named senior Fulbright Lecturer at Tel Aviv University in Israel where she taught courses in James Joyce's "Ulysses" and Irish folklore. She was a Fellow of the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France, in 1984 and 1989. Mrs. Dunleavy began her teaching career at Hunter College. In 1969 she was appointed assistant professor of English and master of Ruth Benedict College at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1970 where she rose to the rank of full professor and coordinator of Irish studies. She began writing for the Little Golden Books Series in the early 1950s. She authored several children's books, such as "Daddies," which was also published in France, Spain and Latin America, and "Happy Days." In 1961 she and her then husband James D. Egleson, co-authored "Parents Without Partners," and in 1977 she wrote and compiled "The O'Conor Papers" with Gareth W. Dunleavy. She and Mr. Dunleavy were awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1983-84 to write the biography of Douglas Hyde which was published in 1991. Mrs. Dunleavy was the editor of the Newsletter of the American Committee for Irish Studies from 1971 until 1978. By her retirement in 1993 she had written and presented more than 50 essays, monographs and lectures in addition to her printed books. She is survived by her husband and colleague of 30 years, Dr. Gareth W. Dunleavy of Exeter; three children, Karen Galat of Newburyport, Mass., Gweneth Dunleavy of Louisville, Ken., and Stephen Dunleavy of Stateline, Nev.; six grandchildren; and three sisters, Evelyn Mills of Claremore, Okla., Patricia Frank (Sister Francis Marie) of Newark, N.J., and Barbara Benefield of Red Bluff, Calif. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at 3 p.m. at RiverWoods at Exeter, 7 RiverWoods Drive, Exeter.
