"Norman" Oswell Jr. KITTERY, Maine - J. "Norman" Oswell Jr., 80, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, following a long illness, at Langdon Place in Dover, N.H. Born Dec. 18, 1920, in South Paris, Maine, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James N. and Eva (Swett) Oswell Sr. He attended local schools in South Paris and at the age of 15, he and his family moved to Kittery, where he attended and graduated from Traip Academy. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and served his country proudly during World War II as a pilot. He was honorably discharged as a second lieutenant. He worked for 40 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, first as a blacksmith's helper and then as a shipfitter's assistant. He took courses in drafting and design, and eventually became a design engineering specialist at the shipyard, where he retired in 1980. Outside of work, he was fond of working around his home and camp, and being around his family. He was active with St. Mark's United Methodist Church as a member, a former trustee and a longtime, very popular Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed boating and water skiing. He will long be remembered for his many hours of volunteer work with the youth of Kittery. He was instrumental in starting the Kittery Saturday morning basketball program for the young people of the town. He spent many wonderful times attending basketball games with his friends and family. He is survived by his wife, the former Carolyn Thompson of South Berwick, whom he married on April 21, 1945, in St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Mrs. Lois Miller of South Berwick; Mrs. Jill Estes of Kittery; and Jay Oswell of Dover, N.H.; a sister, Charlotte Lackner of Mayfield Heights, Ohio. He will be greatly missed by his precious and beloved grandchildren, Lynn and Tara Eisner, and Timothy and Emily Estes; and his very close friend, niece Elizabeth Farmer of Chesterfield, Ohio. OSWELL - J. "Norman" Oswell Jr., 80, of Kittery, Maine, died Dec. 25, 2000. There will be no public funeral or visitation hours. Burial will take place in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. A public memorial will take place at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 60 Government St., Kittery, with the Rev. Pat Bristow-Carrico, pastor, officiating. Norman Oswell Jr., 80, who died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, was held on Thursday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home. The Rev. Patricia Bristow-Carrico, pastor of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery, officiated. The American flag was presented to Mr. Oswell's wife, Carolyn (Thompson) Oswell, by Staff Sgt. Lee M. Jackson of the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Portsmouth. A graveside committal service and burial followed in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. Pallbearers were Glen Estes, Henry Miller, Jay Oswell and Wayne Barker.
