Born on April 27, 1918, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of the late Paul and Geraldine (Prouty) Bissell. He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he met and later married his wife. He then attended Yale University where he received a master's degree in forestry. He was a U.S. veteran, having served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Before retirement, he was employed by the University of Maine as the extension forester for the state of Maine. He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, Old Hutmen's Association, Jackson Historical Society, New Hampshire Forestry Foundation, the Mount Washington Observatory, White Mountain Interpretive Association, Kiwanis, UNH Alumni Association, Girl Scouts and the Tree Farm Association. He spent his retirement years volunteering throughout the Mount Washington Valley, particularly in areas relating to conservation. For a period of time, he served as a conductor on the Conway Scenic Railroad, fulfilling a lifelong passion for trains which came second only to his love of antique automobiles. Family members include his wife, of more than 50 years, Priscilla (Emery) Bissell; two daughters, Susan Beechum of Orlando, Fla., and Nancy Rancourt of Bartlett; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Liza Carroll of Madison, Conn.; and one niece and one nephew.
