He was born on Feb. 29, 1936, in West Stewartstown, the son of Briar and Cassandra (Legge) Hartlen. He attended several North Country schools. He enlisted in the Air Force, where he spent more than 10 years, serving several overseas assignments that included Japan and England. Mr. Hartlen was employed at the North Stratford plywood mill, and later at what is now Wausau Paper, where he spent 31 years. He enjoyed working with his hands, carpentry and was known as an excellent handyman. Family members include his wife of 42 years, Rosalie of North Stratford; a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Suzanne) Farrar of Ellington, Conn.; a brother, Wayne Hartlen of Littleton; three sisters, Mrs. Harold (Evelyn) Shatney of Groveton, Mrs. Bill (Juanita) Sharratt of Masonville, N.Y., and Mrs. Howard (Bernice) Martin of Lunenburg, Vt.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The funeral was on Friday at the Newman Funeral Home.
