Mead LEXINGTON, Mass. - Louis W. Mead, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at his home. He was born July 7, 1920, in St. Louis, Mo. He was educated for four years in public schools, eight years at St. Louis Country Day School and five years at Cornell University, earning a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Lou was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army and reported for active service before graduation. He served in the 4th Engineer Special Brigade, where he participated in amphibious landings in New Guinea, the Philippines and the unit staging for assault on Japan - thank God for Truman. After the war, Lou decided on a nuclear career, spending three years at Oak Ridge, Tenn., with reactors and gaseous diffusion, and at MIT on nuclear instrumentation. His best move was marrying Katherine L. Zwicker; they were happily married until death did they part. Lou joined Tracerlab, then had a series of small companies in the field of nuclear medicine, developing radiopharmaceutical diagnostic tests, many of which are widely used in hospitals today. Lou credits much of his medical achievement and business success to two partners, in the early days financially to Jack R. Carlin, and later scientifically to Dr. Marshall E. Deutsch. Raised and survived by four wonderful children, Elizabeth M. Tabor of New Castle, N.H., William S. Mead, Susan W. Mead and Louis W. Mead Jr.; and five lovable grandchildren, Laura and Max Tabor, Caroline and Eliza Mead, and Katie Mead. All of the above are healthy and living within an hour and a half of both of their homes. How lucky can you get? A founder of Mt. Agamenticus Ski Area, Lou also enjoyed sailing, tennis, reading, music and dogs. He retired at age 70 and took up golf to be with his wife. They have been members of the Cape Arundel Golf Club ever since. In retirement, Lou and Kitty have enjoyed golf, martinis, cross-country skiing, tennis, bridge, sailing, children, grandchildren, dogs, and the family home they built by the water on Drakes Island. "I only regret that my colon cancer was not diagnosed much sooner. An earlier colonoscopy would have added years to my life. If you are over 50, get one." Lou's warmth, wit and love of life will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Katie Couric's National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (https://NCCRA.org or 900-872-3000); or to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells, Maine (207-646-9226). MEAD - Louis W. Mead died at home in Lexington, Mass., on Dec. 7, 2000. **************************************************************************** * * * * Notice: Printing the files within by non-commercial individuals and libraries is encouraged, as long as all notices and submitter information is included.
