The daughter of Kenneth Neil Wildes and Mildred Louise Aldrich, she was born in Fitchburg, Mass., in 1920, and as a young girl moved with her family to Melrose, Mass., where she graduated from Melrose High School in 1938. While a student at Boston University, she achieved distinction as the first woman editor of The Hub, the Boston University yearbook. She became a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, was honored with the Scarlet Key Award for outstanding achievement in student activities and graduated from Boston University in 1942 with a B.A. in sociology and anthropology from the College of Liberal Arts. Her love for writing and literature led her to a career she cherished as a college librarian, first at Williams College, from 1954 to 1960, as a periodicals librarian and from 1962 to 1987 at Bennington College as an acquisitions/art collections librarian. Upon retirement from Bennington College, she moved to Tenants Harbor in 1988 where she became actively involved as a volunteer at the Jackson Memorial Library. A physical fitness and gardening enthusiast, she was frequently sighted by neighbors and friends walking the roads near Marshall Point Lighthouse, Port Clyde, and the back roads of Tenants Harbor. In 1994 she moved to Eliot to share a household with her daughter, Pam, where she continued a lively walking routine until illness intervened. An outstanding athlete much of her life, her passion for tennis and cycling was well-known by her family and friends. Extremely well-read, she was never without the companionship of a book and was a loyal borrower at the Fogg Memorial Library in Eliot. A grand friend to wildlife and animals, she cared for an extensive menagerie of beloved felines and canines at her home in Eliot until shortly before her death. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Wildes of Eliot; three sisters, Jan Fawcett of York Harbor, Barbara Curtis, and her husband, of Cape Elizabeth, and Carol Atkinson of Mattapoisett, Mass.; four grandchildren, Holly Wildes Garrison of Kittery, Christopher Dyson of Worcester, Vt.; Hilary Dyson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Shealea Dyson, and her husband, of Kittery Point; one great-grandson, Zander Cecil Wildes Dyson; and several nieces and nephews, including Judith Pettiford of Portsmouth.
