The daughter of the late Edward and Lillian Bray Hutchinson, she was born on Little Deer Isle, Maine. She graduated from Rockland (Maine) High School and Burdett College in Lynn, Mass. Before retirement she was an executive secretary at the University of New Hampshire. She was married to the late John R. Gifford, former principal of the Pembroke (Mass.) High School and a teacher and counselor at Portsmouth High School. They lived for more than 35 years on their beloved farm in Stratham before moving to Durham. She is survived by her three children, Dale G. Scott of Wareham, Mass.; Dianne G. Monahan of New Durham; and John H. Gifford of Annapolis, Md.; and their spouses, Robert D. Scott, Daniel H. Monahan and Paula P. Gifford; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with whom she was very close and dearly loved. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2001, in the chapel of the Community Church of Durham, Main Street.
