Permission received to include in the USGenWeb Archives. Alfred J. Carbone DEERFIELD -- Alfred J. Carbone, 93, of South Road, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at St. Theresa's Manor in Manchester. He was born June 15, 1907 near Genoa, Italy, the son of the late August and Celestina (Bacigaluppi) Carbone. He attended Haverhill High School in Haverhill, Mass., and graduated Lowell University with honors in 1926. He formerly lived in Kingston. A retired textile chemist, Mr. Carbone was a member of The Society of Dyers and Colorists and member emeritus of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, where he served as national councilor, and was instrumental in establishing an educational program in textile coloring. For many years he was a member of the Drysalters Club of New England. In recent years he was technical manager of the New England district with Sandoz (now called Novartis) Colors and Chemicals. He was active as a consultant in the dyeing of wool and synthetic fibers and was invited to serve on the National Research Council pertaining to the coloring of fabrics for the military. Mr. Carbone is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillian (Hale) Carbone of Deerfield; one son, David H. Carbone of Manchester; one daughter, Andrena Y. Lindahl of Deerfield; one sister, Rita Cappabianca of Haverhill; one brother, Francis Carbone of Brookline, Mass.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond. Evelyn Rose Unger RAYMOND -- Evelyn Rose Unger, 86, of 35 Lisa Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000 at her home. She was born Jan. 11, 1914 in Wallingford, Conn., the daughter of the late Nicholas and Maria (Delgrego) Porto. Mrs. Unger was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Unger, who died in 1994 and by a brother, John Porto. She is survived by a son, Brian A. Unger of Raymond; a sister, Rose Pietruski of Wallingford, Conn.; a brother, Raymond Porto of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Johns Cemetery in Wallingford, Conn. The Rev. Frank Bellivzi will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Meriden Humane Society, 540 Oregon Road, Meriden, CT 06451. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond. Richard A. Lewis RAYMOND -- Richard A. Lewis Sr., 78, of Rita Avenue, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000 at his home in Raymond. He was born July 9, 1922 in Lynn, Mass. A longtime resident of Lynn and Nahant, Mass., he had resided in Raymond for the last 25 years. He worked for many years as an office machine repairman for Avco Textron in Wilmington, Mass. Mr. Lewis served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He retired as a sergeant in the army after more than 20 years of service which included a job as an office machine repairman in the White House during the Kennedy administration. He was the first non-commissioned officer to place the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1961. Mr. Lewis was an active member of the Pearl Harbor Association and the American Legion Richard A. Mitchell Post 51 in Epping. He was a sexton for the First Church of Christ in Lynn for many years. Mr. Lewis was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Potts) Lewis who died in December 1999 and also by a sister, Mary Thompson. He is survived by two daughters, Dale Lewis Schriefer of Deltona, Fla., and Charlotte Hogan of Chester; one son, Richard A. Lewis Jr. of Lynn; one brother, Warren Hussey of Texas; four sisters, Ruth Burke of Lynn, Pearl Engle of Pennsylvania, Marian Holmes of Florida and Florence Wood of Illinois; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, On the Common, Raymond. Burial will full military honors will follow in the New Pine Grove Cemetery, Raymond.
