Born in Marblehead, Mass., Oct. 5, 1912, at the top of the "Old Alley Steps," he was the son of Mark and Annie (Stafford) Piper. He was a graduate of the Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood, N.H., and attended the Essex Agriculture School in Massachusetts. He worked for the state of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, retiring in 1974. He lived most of his life in New Hampshire and for the past several years in North Charlestown. He attended the North Charlestown Methodist Church, enjoyed crossword puzzles, small woodworking projects and especially attending his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sporting events. He married Evelyn T. Piper, who survives him, on Oct. 9, 1971. He is also survived by three children, James Piper Jr., of Rye, Elizabeth Gaskell of Portsmouth, and Patricia Graves of Springfield, Vt.; five stepchildren, Patricia Robinson of Bellows Falls, Vt.; Augusta Manzanera of Boca Raton, Fla.; Barbara Clemens of Concord, N.H.; Larry Martin of Concord, N.C.; and Sharon Fish of Westmoreland, N.H.; 29 grandchildren; and 33 great-grand- children. He was predeceased in death by Phyllis W. Piper, the mother of his children; a brother, Stafford Piper; a sister, Gladys P. Blaney and a grandson, Benjamin Piper. PIPER - James Frederic Piper Sr., 88, of Judland Heights, Charlestown, N.H., died Jan. 16, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye. There will be no calling hours and burial will be held in the spring in the Northwood Ridge Cemetery, Northwood, N.H.
