French MANCHESTER - Richard P. French, 88, of Manchester and formerly of Whitefield, died on Jan. 19, 2001, at a Manchester health care center. He was born on May 18, 1912, in Whitefield, the son of Herbert and Sadie Miller French. He attended grammar school in Wilmot Flat and was a graduate of Whitefield High School, class of 1929, and Bowdoin College, class of 1933, where he was a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. In 1934, he received a masters degree in Education from the University of New Hampshire. Mr. French taught high school physics in Whitefield for one year and spent the following 10 years teaching junior high school in Bloomfield, Conn. Upon returning to Whitefield, he worked at the Geo. M. Stevens and Son Insurance Agency and later became a partner in the firm, working there 35 years until his retirement. He had lived in Manchester for the past four years. Mr. French was a former moderator for the Town of Whitefield, a position he held for 20 years and had been a member of the White Mountain Rotary Club since 1946. He was a member of White Mountain Lodge F. & A.M. and the Shrine. He loved amateur theatre and appeared in many productions at the Chase Barn Playhouse in Whitefield. Mr. French was an avid golfer, holding memberships in the Mountain View Country Club and the Bethlehem Country Club, and was an annual participant in the White Mountain Seniors’ Golf Tournament. He was a member of the Whitefield Methodist Church. Members of his family include his wife of 64 years, Helen Reece French of Manchester; three daughters, Nancy F. O’Neill of Hutchinson Island, Fla., Susan M. French of Brea, Calif. and Deborah R. Kramer of Carmel Valley, Calif.; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons, and a great-granddaughter. A memorial service was held at the Goodwin Funeral Home on Monday. The Rev. Earl Robinson officiated. Burial will take place in the spring in the Pine Street Cemetery in Whitefield.
