Jackson Jr. PORTSMOUTH - CM1 Robert L. Jackson Jr., U.S. Navy retired, 77, of 80 Haven Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre. He was born in Groton, Conn., on Oct. 14, 1923, the son of the late Robert L. Sr. and Alice R. (Call) Jackson. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1941. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and eventually enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Seabees. He also served in the European Command Headquarters, Frankfurt, Germany, and Paris; the Taiwan Defense Command in Taipei, Taiwan; and also in Vietnam, retiring in 1974. Over the years, he had been employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1982 with a total of 37 years of service to the U.S. government. He was a member of North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; of the Emerson Hovey Post 168 VFW in Portsmouth; the Fleet Reserve Association; the China-Burma-India Veterans Association; and the Navy League. Survivors include two nieces, Beverly Salzmann of Hinterbruehl, Austria, and Marsha Ogden of Silver Spring, Md.; a grandniece and four grandnephews; and several cousins. A sister, Carolyn F. Payne, predeceased him. JACKSON - CM1 Robert L. Jackson Jr., U.S. Navy retired, 77, of 80 Haven Road, Portsmouth, died Jan. 2, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at North Congregational Church Chapel, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends who desire may make donations in his memory to the Memorial Fund of North Congregation Church, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth NH 03801. Interment will be private in the spring. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with services held at the North Congregational Church Chapel. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor, officiated. Gary MacDonald was organist. In attendance were members of the church.
