Whitcher Thelma W. Whitcher, 95, of Woodsville, formerly of South Ryegate, Vt., died on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, after an extended illness. She was born in West Paris, Me. on Oct. 8, 1905, the daughter of James Cleveland and Gertrude (Martha) Verge. Thelma was a graduate of Lyndon Institute and Lyndon State College in Vermont. Mrs. Whitcher was an elementary school teacher for 35 years, teaching in Ryegate, Vt. and at the Blue Mountain Union School in Wells River, Vt., and in Bath, Landaff, Groveton, Charleston and Stark, and at the Lime Kiln School. She married Richard Ralph Whitcher Jan. 29, 1932. She was member of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church; the Bath, Rebekahs and the Corinthian Chapter 42 OES of Wells River. She was predeceased by one son, Robert Whitcher, and one sister, Rowena Forbes. Surviving relatives include her husband of 68 years, Richard Ralph Whitcher, of Woodsville; one son, Richard Ralph Whitcher Jr. of San Antonio, Tex., one daughter, Thelma Locke of Lisbon; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia Verreil of California. The funeral was held on Jan. 20 from the Ricker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Catherine Cook officiating. Burial followed in Pine Grove Cemetery, Woodsville. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Horse Meadow Senior Center, P.O.
