Bardwell YORK, Maine - Willis S. Bardwell, 92, of Long Sands Road, husband of Irene (Sprague) Bardwell, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at York Hospital after a long illness. He was born Sept. 11, 1908, in York, the son of Dwight and E. Gertrude (Weeks) Bardwell, and graduated from York High School in 1926. In 1924 he began working at the York Harbor Reading Room. He worked there for 45 years, 21 as manager, before retiring in 1970. He was also employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II. He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York, a life member of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge No. 198 AF&AM, and a life member of the York Country Club. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elsie (Young) Bardwell, in 1975; a son, John Dwight Bardwell III in 1996; and a sister, Olive Fernald in 1966. Survivors include his second wife, Irene (Sprague) Bardwell of York; one son, David Bardwell and his wife, Geraldine, of York; two stepdaughters, Katharine Howard of Kittery and Linda Louk of West Virginia; five grandchildren, J. Dwight Bardwell IV of York, Melissa Wood of Kittery, Susanne Morgan of York Beach, Vickie Witham of Wells, and Linda Bardwell of York Beach; and nine great-grandchildren. BARDWELL - Willis S. Bardwell of Long Sands Road, York, Maine, died Jan. 28, 2001, at York Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York. There are no visiting hours. Spring interment in First Parish Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.
