RICHELIEU, Que. - The Rev. Charles Moreau, O.M.I., 84, died on Feb. 15, 2001 at Residence de Mazenod after a brief illness. He was born on Nov. 21, 1916, in Bedford, Que., the son of Ernest and Delia (Bessette) Moreau. He entered the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in August of 1938. He was ordained to the priesthood on July 2, 1944. His first place of ministry was in Port Salut, Haiti, followed by an assignment as assistant pastor of St. Jean-Baptiste Parish in Lowell, Mass. until 1950. He joined the mission band, preaching in various places for the next six years. During this time, he was retreat master at the Oblat Retreat House in Hudson. From 1956 to 1959, he returned to Haiti. After 1971, he spent two years in Berlin, where he was chaplain at St. Louis Hospital, followed by two years on the retreat house staff at Ephpheta House. He was assigned to Colebrook, in 1975, where he remained until 1979 as superior and treasurer. He became semi-retired in June 1993 and left Lowell for St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Charlestown. In November of 1993, he went to the Shrine of 0ur Lady of Grace, Colebrook. where he would remain a member of the staff and Oblate Community until this past January, when he went into full retirement. Family members include two sisters, Madame Simone Rheaume and Madame Rose-Helene Larocque; a brother, Bro. Jean-Baptiste Morneu, SM. He will be cremated and his remains interred at Residence de Mazenod.
