Dufour II, 76, of Gerrish Manor in Boscawen, N.H., died on Friday, February 16, 2001 at the Veterans¹ Hospital in White River Jct., Vt. He was born in West Rumney, N.H., on the family farm, the son of Francis X. Dufour and Ethel (Hazlett) Dufour. He grew up in Colebrook and was graduated from Colebrook Academy. Drafted by the Army right after high school, he joined the Marine Corps and served as a radar operator in the South Pacific islands during World War II. For many years, he was a member of VFW Post 816 in Littleton, and at one time served in the position of state commander. Living much of his life in Whitefield, he was the epitome of the true Yankee "jack of all trades." He worked as an estate caretaker, gardener, professional logger, draftsman, metal machinist, painter, finish carpenter and bridge builder, along with many other jobs. A skilled craftsman in several trades and working mostly with his hands, his main loves were working with wood and gardening. He loved sports and was a competitive candlepin bowler and golfer for many years, vying for the club championship at Bethlehem Country Club for several years and winning it once. He also led different candlepin bowling teams to numerous statewide and New England championships in various tournaments back in the 1960s and 70s. In his later years he did volunteer work at the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen, and will be remembered for his tending of the flower beds there, which brought much beauty and enjoyment to the patrons, staff and visitors of that facility. His family includes his wife of 58 years, Mary (Fearon) Dufour of Boscawen; his mother, Ethel Dufour of Mystic, Conn.; two sisters, Elaine Adams of Mystic, Conn.; and Dorothy Leach of Richland, Wash.; two daughters, Bonnie Labrack and Betty Campbell of Dover, N.H.; four sons, Richard Dufour of Bethlehem, James Dufour of Penacook, Francis X. Dufour III of Westminster, Md., and Daniel Dufour of Belmont; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Pillsbury Funeral Home in Littleton. Visiting hours and funeral services were held at the funeral home on Monday, February 19. Memorial donations may be made to the World War II Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 96074, Washington, DC 20090.
