She was born May 11, 1915, in Portsmouth. After completing her education in Portsmouth, she went on to teach elementary school at Brixham School in York, Maine. She and her husband and two daughters moved to Vallejo, Calif., in 1956, where she volunteered for the local hospital guild. She and her husband retired to Hampton in 1979, where she continued her commitment to volunteer work at Exeter Hospital. She and her husband relocated to Auburn, Calif., in 1990, where her immediate family was privileged and delighted to share her company. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Donald Hughes; as well as daughters Donna Stowell and Jane Hughes; her sister, Pauline Tucker of Portsmouth; brothers John and Earl Rowe of Portsmouth; grandchildren Charles Stowell and Lisa Zeng; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. A lifelong member of the First Methodist Church, she will be remembered for her sweet disposition, quick wit and endless love and affection.
