Slanetz KEENE - Mrs. Helen C. Slanetz, a longtime resident of Durham, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in Keene. The daughter of George and Catherine Carruth Colby, she was born in Clinton, Mass., on May 24, 1908. She received her education in schools in Clinton and Enfield, Conn., and New Britain Teachers College. She was an active member of the Durham Community Church where she taught Sunday school and accompanied the Junior Choir. She was a past president of the Women's Guild and served on many church committees. She was a founding member of the Durham Youth Association. She was active in the state Republican Party, serving as chairman of the Durham Republican Committee and treasurer of the Strafford County Republican Committee. She was a member of the State Republican Committee for more than 40 years and also served in two constitutional conventions and was the first woman assistant moderator for Durham. She was well known in Durham for her piano playing. She studied both violin and piano and played popular music by ear. She was a member of a jazz band and organized "Helen's Friends," a group of singers who, for many years, sang regularly at area nursing homes. She was the widow of Dr. Lawrence W. Slanetz, an emeritus professor and dean at the University of New Hampshire, who died in 1986. She is survived by a son, L. William Slanetz of Keene; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Caryl) F. Carle of Derry; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A son, Robert, predeceased her in 1985. SLANETZ - Mrs. Helen C. Slanetz, a longtime resident of Durham, died Feb. 13, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, at the Durham Community Church. Burial will be in the Durham Cemetery in the spring.
