Joseph Edward Rehler PORTSMOUTH - Capt. Joseph Edward Rehler, CEC, USN retired, of 77 Wentworth St., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2000, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home. Born Jan. 19, 1907, in Oil City, Pa., he was the son of the late Edward and Mary Rehler. He was a 1930 graduate of MIT with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and obtained a master's degree in chemistry and bacteriology in 1947 from St. Bonaventure University. He also completed graduate courses at New York University, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, George Washington University, the Naval War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He was a licensed professional engineer and published several papers on water treatment and on the construction of dry dock facilities. He was a member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and the New York State Water Control Association. He was also a member of the Society of Military Engineers and was a past president of the Piscataqua post, a past president of the 800-member Washington, D.C., post, and a past first vice president of the Chicago post. After work with the Permutit Co., he was appointed superintendent of water for the City of Olean, N.Y., during which time he was in the Naval Reserve. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served 30 years as a career officer. His tours of duty included Philadelphia, Cape May; U.S. Technical Mission in Paris, France; the Naval War College; Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C.; U.S. Fleet Activities in Japan; Washington, D.C., as head of Yards and Docks; Great Lakes, Ill., as district Public Works officer; Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as Public Works officer; the Industrial College of the Armed Forces as director of the correspondence school; and the U.S. European Command as chief of civil engineering division. After retirement from the Navy in 1970, he served as acting superintendent of public works for Portsmouth and was subsequently resident engineer for the district of Dover. His hobbies included antique clock collecting, golf, hunting and fishing. He is survived by Marion Rehler, his wife of more than 70 years; his daughter, JoAnn Lamoreaux; grandchildren, Diane Wyatt and Brian Lamoreaux; sister Eileen Shannon; brothers Kenneth and Nicholas; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Chuck, James and Clarence.
