Shaw Sr. PORTSMOUTH - Joseph A. Shaw Sr., 71, husband of Lizzie M. (Wilson) Shaw, of 38 Coakley Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on June 17, 1929, a son of Alfred and Ambrosine Shaw. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, retiring as a technical sergeant after 23 years of service. He served on the Portsmouth Police Auxiliary and was formerly employed as a manager at Kentucky Fried Chicken in Portsmouth and as a security guard at Portsmouth High School and the Hanover parking garage. He was also employed at the Seabrook nuclear power plant. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Portsmouth; a member and past commander of Frank E. Booma Post #6, American Legion; and a member and past chaplain of Emerson Hovey Post #168, VFW. Besides his wife of 47 years, survivors include one daughter, Ollegra Sterling of Portsmouth; one son, Joseph A. Shaw Jr. of Barrington; two grandchildren, Monique and Veronica Sterling, both of Portsmouth; three brothers, Frank, Cecil and Kenneth Shaw, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Jewel Jackson of New York, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, Peverly Hill Road, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with American Legion services at 5:45 p.m. by Frank E. Booma Post #6 and VFW services at 6 p.m. by Emerson Hovey Post #168.
