He was born on September 22, 1917 in Lewiston, Maine the son of the late Phillip and Roseann (Gosselin) Maltais. Mr. Maltais was self-employed as a woodsman for 29 years, and later worked for 27 years as a refiner for the James River Mill in Groveton until his retirement. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and woodworking. He also enjoyed playing bingo and cribbage. Mr. Maltais was a member of Sacred Heart Church in North Stratford, and he was a caretaker of the church grounds and the cemetery for many years. He is survived by a son, Donald Maltais of Groveton; four daughters, Gertrude Cote of Southwick, Mass., Madeleine Garon of Hudson, N.H., Lise Januska of Feeding Hills, Mass., and Suzanne Hicks of Springfield, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous cousins. Mr. Maltais was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Mrs. Lucille G. (Lafond) Maltais, who died on June 8, 2000. Calling hours were held on Monday at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Church with the Reverend Daniel Deveau as celebrant. Interment services will be held in the spring at Fairview Cemetery in North Stratford. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Jenkins Funeral Home.
