Harrigan, Publisher (Feb 21, 2001 -issue) "All the news that fits" FORMATTED: by CParziale, Feb 2001 ***************************************************************************** Velma Ames CANAAN, Vt. - Mrs. Velma Carter Ames, 84, of Connecticut Avenue in Canaan, Vt. died on Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at her home with family present. Velma was born on Feb. 21, 1916, in East Corinth, Vt., the daughter of the late Ralph W. and Harriet (Welch) Carter. Velma graduated from Bradford Academy in 1934, and later from the Lyndon Institute in 1936. She taught school in Wolcott, Vt., until 1938, later teaching in Derby Line, Vt., in 1939. On June 27, 1939, she married Marshall A. Ames, moving to Canaan, Vt. where she was a homemaker and a teacher in Canaan and Stewartstown. She was the chairwoman for the Christmas Good Cheer Box committee of the Canaan Women’s Club for over 40 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #0047, Canaan, the Colebrook Bridge Club, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Grace United Methodist Church. Velma served as the assistant judge of the Essex County Superior Court, Canaan town lister and as the Cancer Society Fund Drive chairwoman. Velma is survived by the following family members: A son, Marshall Ames Jr. of Potomac, Md.; a daughter, Mrs. Jean-Carol Dunham of Shelburne, Vt.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Velma was preceded in death by her loving husband, Marshall A. Ames, who died in 1985, and a sister, Cecil Blanchard, who died in 1999. Funeral service will be held today (Wednesday), at 11 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church in Canaan, Vt. Interment service will be held in the spring at the Alice Hunt Cemetery. There will be no calling hours, though immediately following the service, there will be a gathering of family and friends in the church vestry.
